What is a watch winder?

If you have a serious watch collection, or even a crown jewel timepiece that only comes out on weekends and special occasions, a watch winder is an essential component to your accessories. Multipurpose tools, they serve as an attractive way to store, protect, and keep an automatic watch on accurate time, so you can pick up and wear it whenever it’s needed.

Automatic watches have a system of self-winding gears that transfer the natural kinetic motions of your wrist and arm into the mechanical energy necessary to power the watch, eliminating the hassle of replacing batteries and the inconvenience of hand-winding crowns. Self-winding watches are typically painstakingly assembled and require a high degree of mechanical refinement, making them the preferred choice for luxury watches. The drawback is that after the watch is taken off, it’s typically only able to remain powered for two days or so, and the watch either needs to be worn or shaken to remain ticking. Watch winders work by rotating the watches in a cylinder in regular increments while you aren’t wearing them, ensuring they stay on time.

As automatic, self-winding watches have increased in popularity and progressed technologically, so too have the watch winders designed for them and the situations that they serve best. At Gentleman’s Edge, we offer winders that can suit your unique requirements.

To meet the demands of travel, a smaller and more compact model is needed, and we feature the Scatola del Tempo HDG, handmade in Italy. Made with leather and a soft touch plastic composite, the HDG operates on batteries, which eliminates the need to search for an outlet or adapters when traveling internationally. It is a fine piece to put on a nightstand without taking up too much space, and an easy way of taking the comforts of home on the road.

For a mid-sized option for your home, the Module 2.7 Roadster by Wolf Designs, with an attractive Makassar wood veneer faceplate, offers a myriad of options that travel winders can’t. Able to be programmed for individual winding schedules in either clockwise or counterclockwise directions and rotate watches between 300-1200 turns per day, and with a six or eight watch capacity, the Roadster can service an impressive collection. It also includes an AC adapter for a plug-in, but can run on D-batteries as well.

If you have an extensive collection of timepieces you may require even more home storage, and for that, Gentleman’s Edge offers the Mitch&Marc Addo. With slots for 12 watches and a glass cabinet face, the Addo has independent lighting for a jaw-dropping display of your assemblage. Each watch slot has a simple interface of two dials: one to control how many turns per day, and the other to determine when.

Gentleman’s Edge has thirty-one other watch winders in stock, with each one serving a specific purpose. Look through them all to determine which one would suit your needs the best.
